The wind energy sector in India is led by the indigenous wind energy industry and is making steady progress.

The expansion of the wind industry has resulted in a strong ecosystem, project operation capability and a generation base of about 10,000 MW per annum.

The country currently has the 4th largest wind installed capacity in the world with a total installed capacity of 35.6 GW (as on 31 March 2019), and generated around 52.66 billion units during 2017-18.

The country currently has the 4th largest wind installed capacity in the world with a total installed capacity of 35.6 GW (as on 31 March 2019), and generated around 52.66 billion units during 2017-18.

Government is promoting wind power projects across the country through private sector investment by providing various monetary and financial incentives such as accelerated depreciation benefits, concessional custom duty exemption on certain components of wind power generators, etc. In addition, a Generation Based Incentive (GBI) scheme was made available for wind power projects commissioned before 31 March, 2017.

In addition to the above monetary and other incentives, the following steps have also been taken to promote wind power capacity installation in the country:

Technical assistance including wind resource assessment and identification of potential sites through National Institute of Wind Energy, Chennai.

To facilitate inter-state sale of wind power, inter-state transmission charges and losses have been waived off for wind and solar projects commissioned by March, 2022.

Tariff for procurement of power from grid connected wind power projects with an objective to provide a framework for procurement of wind power through transparent process of bidding, with standardization of process and prescribing roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders Guidelines were issued for based competitive bidding process. The objective of these guidelines is to enable the distribution licensees to avail wind power at competitive rates in a cost efficient manner.
