Success Story of RG(East) CBM Block
The CBM Block Raniganj East (RG(East)-CBM-2001/1) of 500 Sq km area, falling in West Bengal, was awarded to M/s Essar Oil Limited (EOL) in 2001.

The block is currently in Production, after fruitful completion of its Exploration, Pilot and Development Phase. With more than 25 years of learning curve in Coalbed Methane (CBM) development it has developed its state-of-the-art technology which has placed Raniganj East CBM project in the map of India as a leading CBM project.

Key Achievements:

  • Highest no. of CBM wells drilled (350+) in the country.

  • The Block has recoverable reserves of 28 BCM of which 2.2 BCM has been produced.

  • First CBM Block to cross the coveted threshold of 1.0 mmscmd of CBM gas production in the country.

  • Raniganj CBM field is currently producing around 0.8 mmscmd of CBM gas and plans to triple its gas production through drilling around 200 additional wells (vertical/deviated) in the next 1-2 years.

  • Laid extensive surface facilities & pipeline network
    - ~2.0 mmscmd of processing & compression facility to handle CBM gas.
    - ~300 km of both infield and export lines.

  • The Block is in continuous process of digitization and automation of CBM wells and facilities i.e. Real time surveillance & automation (gas flow rate & pump parameters) to address well issues faster and improve productivity.

  • More than Rs. 5,000 Crs. have been invested so far for the development of the asset. The block is all set for turning into a full-fledged commercial project.

  • To ramp-up production technological trials like microbial injection, large scale refracturing through improved design, horizontal well etc are also undergoing.
